Hi and welcome on my website!
I am Mathieu Bourret Soto and I am a third-year PhD student at Bordeaux School of Economics (University of Bordeaux, France). My research focuses on the causes and consequences of conflict in Latin America, drawing on a political economy and development economics approach. From March to July 2025, I am a visiting PhD at NOVAFRICA (Nova SBE, Portugal).

My first thesis chapter is about the long-term consequences of dictatorships, taking the case of Chile. In particular, I study the relationship between exposure to political violence and political trust, especially when the exposure to violence occurred while growing up.
My next thesis chapters will explore two additional types of conflicts. The first will examine the Colombian context, particularly the reintegration of ex-combatants in the society following the 2016 plebiscite. The other will investigate environmental conflicts and their relationship with political behaviors. I am also working on other projects non-related to my thesis, mostly focused on climate change adaptation. Prior to my thesis, I did my master's at CERDI (University Clermont-Auvergne, France) in development economics, majoring in sustainable development.
On this website you will find more info about my work, I would be glad to talk about it!
